Artist Statement

My name is Danielle Smith and I am a self-taught, emerging, fiber artist, and environmental scientist my passion is to capture and celebrate the beauty of our natural world. I am inspired to use art as a mechanism to engage communities in conversations around the impacts of climate change, to create a sense of wonder, and to urge people to protect nature before it is too late.

My preferred medium is wool, the wool is manipulated using felting techniques which transforms it into a dense fiber by bonding or shrinking the fibers together. The process uses either heat, agitation, or moisture to bond the wool fibers together. The process can, depending on the method, produce either 2D felt paintings or 3D wool sculptures.

The work I produce is not only functional but has colour, texture, and tactile qualities. Using both traditional and innovative techniques, I aim to show the diversity and qualities felt making can be taken to and push boundaries, both artistically and socially, with my work.
